Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contract A/S (BWSC) is a global turnkey developer, contractor and operator of tailored medium to large-scale power plants. BWSC deals in projects for conventional engine-based power plants, floating power plants, as well as for selected renewable and hybrid technologies. BWSC takes a leading role in the development of Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects. Their product range also includes transmission lines, distribution systems and generation services. Within the last three decades, BWSC has supplied more than 180 power plants to 53 countries with a total generating capacity in excess of 3,500 MW.
In November 2018, BWSC was awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the waste-to-energy plant, Hooton Bio Power Resource Recovery Centre in the UK. The contract also comprises an operation and maintenance agreement to operate the facility for 15 years. The facility will utilise Advanced Conversion Technologies to process 240,000 tonnes per annum and generate 25.2 MW of electricity which will be exported to the grid after the facility’s own power needs are met. The project reached financial close in October 2018, with BWSC beginning construction in November 2018. Construction and commissioning has continued in 2022 and operations are expected to commence towards the end of 2022.
As a result of the contract award, BWSC required a trust-worthy, reliable security partner to assist with the specific security requirements during the construction phase. The security requirements include controlling access to the site, taking deliveries, assisting with the enforcement of the site’s H&S regulations and keeping a log of the visitors. During the evenings, the security officers act as a visual deterrent during the dark hours to prevent any trespassers gaining access to the site. Regular perimeter patrols are also conducted to ensure any security breaches are rectified immediately.
BWSC went out to tender for the security contract for the duration of the project to find a security partner who was able to cater to the project requirements in October 2018. Following a successful tender process, Churchill was awarded the three-year contract in November 2018 to support the security of the construction phase. With one week to mobilise, Churchill ensured we were equipped and ready to have security guards on site for the commencement of the project.
Churchill wanted to ensure the commencement of the project ran as smoothly as possible for BWSC, so prior to the project commencement, senior management from both parties attended a site meeting to run through the specific site needs and put the Risk Assessment & Assignment Instructions in place ahead of schedule, signed off by both parties.
Since the mobilisation, Churchill has had a brilliant working partnership with BWSC and continued to do so until the end of the construction phase. Over the last 12 months, BWSC has given Churchill a 100% SLA score, meaning our services delivered by our fully trained, on-site officers met BWSC’s exact expectations, with no suggestions on how we can improve. The project has been a huge success for both BWSC and Churchill, and a fantastic partnership between key members of each party has been formed. Churchill has since been awarded a separate 5-year contract for BWSC Generation Services UK Ltd in Brigg, North Lincolnshire.
In addition to the above, our Security Officer Iqbal has been nominated by the client for our Quarterly Employee Awards for Outstanding Service.
