Flogas are a leading Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplier. The company has been providing alternative energy solutions to homes across Britain for more than 35 years. Flogas’ site at Avonmouth was formerly owned by the National Grid; now, however, the facility has been purchased by Flogas and is the largest of its kind in the UK. Eventually, the site’s storage terminal will have the capacity to store 34,564 tonnes of LPG.
The site is currently going through an 18-month conversion process. This process will see the site change from a Liquefied Natural Gas storage facility to a Liquefied Petroleum Gas storage facility. During this process, the facility has also been classed as a COMAH site. As such, the quality of security personnel on site must be second to none.
In order to continue operating effective security, and to minimise employee disruption, we chose to retain the security team that was present during the National Grid’s ownership of the site.
This team were fully up to speed with current regulations and procedures due to training from the previous site owner. This training included carrying out all required checks on incoming and outcoming vehicles while also retaining a high level of access control – as well as a range of additional comprehensive industrial security techniques.
All existing staff were successfully retained, and the site is currently 100 percent self-sufficient – meaning that the core officers assigned to Flogas are the only officers that are currently deployed on the site, and all holidays are covered by core site officers which eliminates the need for the usage of relief officers. This approach has ensured staff continuity and delivered much needed site integrity.
